The Centre for Regional Science (Cerum) was established by the swedish government in 1983 with a mission to initiate and carry out research on regional development, to carry out multidisciplinary research projects, and to spread knowledge on research findings to various public interests. Cerum aims for a long-term build up of competence within the following areas:
Spatial theory (Urban, regional and rural)
Qualitative analysis of spatial processes
Simulation of spatial structures and dynamic processes
GIS, spatial statistics, and data
Spatial policy, implementation, and evaluation
The focus of CERUM's activities lies within the field of Social Sciences - disciplines such as Social and Economic Geography, Economics, Economic History and Political Science are often present in CERUM's projects. We also carry out spatial research oriented towards the Arts, Natural Sciences & Technology and Medicine. This interdisciplinary research has a great potential for further development. CERUM also contributes to the needs of the surrounding region for knowledge and competence. We carry out research assignments, seminars and publish popular scientific articles and books.
What happend in Hemavan? Conference Proceedings
March 29 - April 1 2011
In late March and early April 2011 about 60 researchers met up in Hemavan Ski-resort in the Mountain area of Västerbotten. The reserchers came from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Poland and the US.
With academic interest in Political Science, Social and Economic Geography, Economics and more there where no shortage of topics to discuss. The First Nordic Winter Conference in Hemavan fenced Regions in terms of Sustainability, Growth and Policy and was very much appreciated by the delegates, not least the social programme with dog sleighing and down hill skiing in mountins of former world cup winners Anja Pärson and Ingemar Stenmark.
The conference was financed by the European Structural Funds, The Västerbotten Region, Västerbotten County Council, Umeå, Skellefteå and Lycksele municipalities and supported by the Västerbotten Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Business Owners in Västerbotten.

In 1st of June until 3rd of June a conference on Non-Linear Economic Dynamics will be arranged by the The Dynamical Systems Group of the University of Murcia, Spain.
The research group started work back in 1987, the year F. Balibrea Gallego first taught a post-graduate course on the subject in that University. It has had stable financing since 1995 and today it gathers researchers from several universities around Spain. The researchgroup has
produced 23 PhD thesis and 17 undergraduate thesis, it has co-organized or participated in 9 international conferences and 8 national conferences, and has published more than 250 research papers and 13 books. And in early June they will arrange their first own conference, in honour to Professor Tönu Puu, Centre for Regional Science, Umeå university.
- Tönu Puu has been a great motivator and stimulated to broad discussions in the resarchfield and this conference is arranged in his honour.
Tönu Puu is Key Note Speeker at the conference and will hold a presentation with title Asset Pricing - a New Apporach
Tönu Puu is Professor in Economics with origin from Estonia. He came to Uppsala, Sweden in 1956 and started to study at the university. Eight years later he recieved his doctoral degree. In 1971 he started to work as a Professor in Economics at Umeå university, and after retirement in 2001 he has been connected to Centre for Regional science, CERUM.
